A Looked After Child (LAC) is a child who is (a) in the care of a Local Authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a Local Authority in the exercise of their social services functions. This status also applies to a child who was previously a LAC but immediately after being Looked After became subject to an adoption, residence or special guardianship order.
For consideration as a LAC please provide a letter from the social worker confirming: (1) the legal status of the child (2) which Local Authority the child is in care with (3) that the child will be in care at the start of the school placement (4) the reasons for the school preferences.
In the case of a previously Looked After Child please provide: (1) an adoption order under section 46 of the Adoption and Children Act 2002; or a residence order settling the arrangements to be made as to the person with whom the child is to live under section 8 of the Children Act 1998; or a special guardianship order appointing one or more individuals to be a child’s special guardian(s), under section 14A of the Children Act 1989. (2) a letter from the Local Authority that last looked after the child confirming that he or she was looked after immediately prior to that order being made.
